Heading off on Holiday with Your Dog

Whether it’s your first trip with your dog or you’re a seasoned traveller, this quick checklist is here to help you set off feeling organised — and avoid the last-minute scramble.
🐾 Is your ID tag up to date?
It’s a legal requirement in the UK for dogs to wear a collar with your name and address on it when out in public. Make sure it’s still readable, securely attached, and has a current mobile number if you’re happy to include that.
🐶 Is your microchip registered — and working?
Microchipping is also required by law, but it only helps if your contact details are correct. A quick check with your vet before you travel can give peace of mind (and confirm the chip is still scanning properly).
🚗 Is your dog safely restrained in the car?
The Highway Code requires dogs to be "suitably restrained" in a vehicle so they can't distract or injure the driver. This could be a harness, a crate, or a dog guard in the boot — whatever is safe and secure for your dog.
🎒 Can you easily reach what you need during the journey?
Don’t bury essentials under the rest of the luggage. Have water, a lead, poo bags, and maybe a towel or some wipes within easy reach. Accidents, delays, or just a comfort break — you’ll thank yourself for being prepared.
🥣 Packed the usual food and feeding kit?
Holiday is not the time for switching food unless you absolutely have to. Keep your dog’s routine as normal as possible, and don’t forget bowls, any supplements or meds, and their favourite treats.
🛏️ What does the place you’re staying actually offer?
Some holiday lets say “dog friendly” but barely tolerate dogs. At Lebanon Cottage, dogs are welcome — not just allowed. We offer:
An enclosed garden
A separate paddock for play and pottering
A comfy, cared-for space that works for both people and dogs
But it’s worth checking any holiday let you book:
Are there rules around dogs on furniture or stairs?
Do they provide throws, bowls, towels?
Where’s the nearest shop for dog food or emergency supplies?
(If you’re staying here — we’ll point you in the right direction for all of that.)
