A Year in the Paddock at Lebanon Cottage

One of the most-loved features of Lebanon Cottage is the paddock. It’s not landscaped, formal, or fancy — but it’s full of life, colour, and space to play.

In spring, the gorse blooms bright yellow and the footpaths start to reappear after a soggy winter. Soon after, the foxgloves begin their climb, popping up tall and pink across the rougher areas down below. By early summer, the long grasses wave in the breeze and you’ll often find a dog or two bounding through them.

We’ve even had the occasional flurry of snow — rare, but possible! Whatever the weather, the grass keeps growing. Cutting it is one of those quirks of Cornish living — a year-round task, whether it’s April or December. You’ll often find us out there mowing, strimming, or trimming back the edges around the parking area.

The paddock isn’t fully secure, but it’s enclosed and set up as a place to play, sit with a coffee, enjoy a takeaway, or simply watch the birds. There’s a picnic bench at the top with sweeping views across the valley — and more than one guest has told us it’s their favourite spot.

It’s not just a patch of grass. It’s part of what makes Lebanon Cottage feel different — a space to slow down, spread out, and enjoy a proper break.

I'll leave the gallery below to tell the real story.
