Settling in to your holiday let

And Helping Your Dog Feel at Home in a New Place. Sometimes it's the small things that make a big difference

New smells. New layout. New routines.

For us, a holiday cottage feels like a break. For your dog, it’s a whole new world to figure out.

Most dogs adjust well—but a bit of thought in the first 24 hours can make a big difference. It’s not about strict routines or rules. It’s just about helping your dog feel safe, settled, and able to relax.

Here are a few simple ways to ease the transition:

Bring something familiar
A blanket, a bed, a toy—even the smell of home can help. Familiar scent gives your dog an anchor and tells them this new place is “safe enough.”

Take your time to unpack
While you’re settling in, let your dog have a mooch. Keep it calm and low-key. Don’t worry if they seem clingy or a bit unsure at first—it usually passes quickly.

Stick to your usual rhythms (at least for a day or two)
Feed at the usual times. Walk when they’d normally walk. These simple things help your dog feel like the world is still turning in the way they expect.

Get outside—but gently
A walk around the local area can help dogs orient themselves, especially if they’re feeling unsettled indoors. Don’t rush into full-day outings. A short wander is often enough.

Give them permission to rest
Some dogs find new places exciting. Others find them exhausting. Build in quiet time. Let them sleep if they want to. Don’t feel you have to do everything on day one.

At Lebanon Cottage, we’ve tried to make things as dog friendly as possible—simple layout, enclosed garden, and a sense of calm. You’ll find dog throws and towels ready when you arrive. There’s a paddock to explore, but plenty of space to stay in too.

Settling in is part of the holiday. And for many dogs, it’s the start of something really lovely.
