Carn Gloose: Big Views and Open Skies

Some places don’t need much explanation — you just stand there and take it all in. Carn Gloose is one of those places.

Head out from St Just towards Cape Cornwall, take a left along Carn Gloose Road, and within minutes you’re on high ground with wide-open views. To the south you can see all the way to the Land’s End lighthouse at Longships. To the north, Cape Cornwall curves into the sea, with the Brisons rising up just offshore. In between, it’s all clifftop and sky. You can walk in either direction, but there’s no rule that says you have to — sitting quietly and watching the sunset is just as good.

Tucked just back from the cliffs is Ballowall Barrow, one of Cornwall’s most important Bronze Age sites. It’s a circular stone monument with hidden burial chambers inside — the sort of place you can stumble across without realising how old it really is. A reminder that this dramatic landscape has been home to people for thousands of years.

The photos below were taken on different days — all seasons, all weather. Because whatever the conditions, Carn Gloose always delivers something special.

🐾 Dogs: Dogs are welcome. You’re near livestock fields, mining works, and open cliffs, so leads are advisable.

🚻 Facilities: None at the site, but you’re only a short drive or walk from St Just for shops, cafes and loos or a walk down to Cape Cornwall where there is a cafe in Summer.

📍 Walks: The South West Coast Path runs right through. Head south to Land’s End or north to Cape Cornwall. Both walks are downhill from Carn Gloose — so remember that when it’s time to come back!
